How To Enchant A Sword In Minecraft

When it comes to close combat, the Sword is the ultimate melee weapon to fight the enemies. In the game, a Sword can be maximized by enchanting it with correct or required set of enchantments for a specific purpose. Hence, in this article, we will discuss How To Enchant A Sword in Minecraft.

One way to enchant a sword is to collect enchantment books from a villager or chests. Then, you will need an anvil and required experience (XP). Next, you should place your sword first in the anvil, and then a book. Congratulations! your sword is finally enchanted.

The other way to enchant your sword is by using an enchantment table. First, you need to place some Lapis Lazuli at the corner, then place your sword, and make sure that you have got at least 30 levels of experience. Then, you can apply any enchantment from the given list to the sword.

Here, we'll be listing all the enchantments a Sword can be enchanted with. Because, from enchanted items, the sword is the most important one. So, get ready to enchant your swords, either with the enchantment table or with an anvil by using enchanted books. And, if you don't have a sword, craft one with a crafting table. Following is the list of best enchantments of a sword in Minecraft.

1. Sharpness

Sharpness enchantment increases the damage of the sword, in Minecraft. It increases the overall damage per hit to every mob in the game. It can be applied to a tool with either enchanting table or an anvil.

There are a maximum of five (5) levels of the Sharpness enchantment. In Java Edition, each level adds 0.5 damage to the Sword. Whereas, in Bedrock Edition, each level adds 1.25 extra damage to the Sword.

The enchantment Sharpness is incompatible with Smite and Bane of Arthropods enchantments.

2. Looting

Looting enchantment, in Minecraft, maximizes the drop or loot chances when a mob is killed with the Sword. In order to find rare items, this enchantment comes in handy. However, it will not affect the experience orb drop, but only loot dropped.

Looting enchantment only requires the player to hold the Sword with Looting in hand. For example, it does not matter how the mob is killed, if the Sword is in your main hand or off-hand (Java Edition), you'll get extra loot.

The maximum level of Looting is three (3), where each level increases the chances of a rare drop per level.

3. Fire Aspect

The third enchantment is Fire Aspect that can set other mobs on fire if hit by the Sword with Fire Aspect. The target immediately starts burning for 4 seconds and takes damage. If used correctly, it will become a kind of curse for some mobs, which will damage them for a period of time, but the fire may disappear if the mob survived the given time.

There are two (2) levels of enchantment.  And, the burning damage can be increased with each level.

Mobs such as chicken, cow, pig, hoglins, who drop meat/beef/mutton etc, when killed with Fire Aspect, drop cooked food.

The enchantment does not burn those mobs which are immune to fire e. g. Wither Skeletonsthe Wither Boss

4. Sweeping Edge ( Java Exclusive)

Sweeping Edge enchantment increases the sweep attack damage dealt with the mobs.

There are three (3) levels for this enchantment, each increasing sweep attack damage per hit (level I = 50%, level II = 67%, level III = 75%).

5. Smite

Smite enchantment increases the damage just like Sharpness, but it is specific to undead mobs.

Undead mobs include skeletons, zombies, zombie villagers, withers, wither skeletons, zombified piglins, skeleton horses, zombie horses, strays, husks, phantoms, drowned, and zoglins.

There are maximum of five (5) levels to this enchantment, each adding 2.5 extra damage to the sword.

Smite is incompatible with Sharpness and Bane of Arthropods.

6. Bane of Arthropods

Bane of Arthropods enchantment increases the damage dealt with mobs which come under the category of arthropods e. g.  spiders, cave spiders, bees, endermites,  silverfish.

There are five (5) levels of Bane of Arthropods, each adding 2.5 damage to the Sword.

Bane of Arthropods is incompatible with Smite and Sharpness.

7. Knockback

Knockback enchantment increases the knockback distance of the Sword enchanted with it. With this enchantment, enemies repel backwards when hit.

The maximum level is two (2) for Knockback, where each level propels the target three (3) blocks away; hence, the highest knockback distance is six (6).

8. Unbreaking

Unbreaking enchantment can be applied to a variety of other tools, armors, weapons and items.

Unbreaking increases the durability of the item enchanted with it. There are a total of three (3) levels of this enchantment,  each level increases the reduction in the breaking or durability damage of the enchanted item.

9. Mending

Mending enchantment restores the health of durability of the item enchanted with it. It can be applied to every set of armor, tools, weapon including shield and Elytra.

Mending is of only one (1) level. It restores the durability of the item by consuming the experience.

Any item in the main hand, offhand,  or in the armor slot, can be repaired by Mending. In order to repair an item, players have to collect experience orbs from any source, and that collected experience will be used for repairing the item.

Mending enchantment is incompatible with Infinity enchantment.

And, these all were the enchantments that can be used with Sword.

Note: Many of these enchantments can be used with other items as well,  i.e. they aren't specific to Swords while excluding. For example, Mending and Unbreaking can be applied to every piece of tool, armor, weapon, such as helmet, hoe, crossbow or any other tool or gear.
