How to use and obtain Potato in Minecraft

Potatoes are a type of vegetable that can be grown, eaten raw, or baked in a furnace or over a campfire.
Note: here we are more concerned with raw potatoes.

How to obtain Potatoes?

Potatoes can be obtained from various ways in minecraft.

Farming

A binomial distribution is used to measure the looting: two drops are fixed, then a drop is attempted three times with a success rate of about 57% to produce the additional 0–3 drops. The number of attempts increases by one for each level of Fortune enchantment.

Natural Generation

Potatoes have a 20% chance of growing on village farm plots. They can also be found in loot chests.

Mob Loot

When killed by a player or tamed wolf, zombies, husks, and zombie villagers have a 2.5 percent chance of losing an iron ingot, carrot, or potato. This is multiplied by 1% for each degree of looting. This increases the likelihood of potatoes dropping:

  • 1: 120 (about 0.83 percent )
  • With Looting I, 11:600 (or 1.83 percent)
  • With Looting II, 17:600 (approximately 2.83 percent)
  • With Looting III, you can get a total of 23:600 points (or 3.83 percent).

What are the usages of Potato?

In Minecraft, potatoes are used for several purposes:

Farming

Potatoes grow in eight stages when farmed. However, since there are only four distinct textures, there are four noticeable stages: every two stages have the same texture, with the exception of growth stage 7, which retains the same appearance as stages 5–6, leaving only stage 8 with the actual, mature appearance.

Potato crops that are fully grown drop 1 to 5 potatoes (on average 3 per crop harvested) and have a 2% risk of dropping a poisonous potato. Fortune III harvests an average of 5.3 potatoes, which can be increased using a method enchanted with Fortune. Bone meal may be used to help the potato reach its final stage of growth.

Food

To eat a potato, press and hold use in the hotbar while it is picked. 1 (🍗) hunger and 0.6 saturation are restored by eating a potato. Eating one backed potato, on the other hand, restores 5 (🍗🍗🍗) hunger and 6.0 hunger saturation.

Breeding

Pigs can follow a player carrying a potato and can be raised.
Villagers may need up to 12 potatoes to breed once.

Trading

As part of their trade, novice-level farmer villagers have a 25% [Bedrock Edition only] or 40% [Java Edition only] chance to buy 26 potatoes for an emerald.

Composting

A baked potato placed in a composter has an 85% chance of raising the compost amount by 1. This is more effective than using raw potatoes to compost.
