Donkeys are passive mobs, introduced in 1.6.1 update. They are considered as similar to horses and mules in the game.
These mobs can be tamed just like horses, and can be ridden when saddled by players.
Where do the donkeys spawn?
In Minecraft, donkeys are found in plain biomes, in a group of 1-3. Donkeys also spawn in Savanah biome, individually.
About 80% of the donkeys spawn as adults in the game. They can be spanwed in Plains and Savanahs. However, 20% of donkeys spawn as foals in the game.
In Bedrock Edition, donkeys spawn in a group of 2-6, in plain biomes at light level 7 or above.
Appearance of Donkeys
Donkeys are smaller than horses, gray in color, having black tail, and erect ears.
They do not change their appearance, when tamed by players.
Drops
Donkeys, when killed by player or tamed wolf, drop 0-2 leathers and 1-3 experience orbs. If, a player is holding a sword with Looting enchantment, the loot can be increased per level of the enchantment.
In case, if player attaches chest and saddle with a donkey and kills it, it will drop the items within the chest.
What are the advantages of a donkey?
Donkeys are useful in several ways, ranging from traveling to carrying loads.
When a donkey is tamed and saddled, it can be ridden just like horses. These mobs can run at a faster rate, similar to horses. They can jump, not that higher, but enough to jump over a fence.
In the game, traveling with a donkey is really easy. Additionally, players can attach chest to carry a large amount of items, which is not possible with horses. Although, a Llama can carry two (2) chests simultaneously, but they can't be ridden.
In body of waters, players can attach a lead to the donkeys with a boat. And, travel through the tides of the oceans.
In a chest attached to donkey, players get extra 15 slots to carry their items in the game. To attach a chest, players have to tame a donkey, ride it, and open inventory. In inventory, there are two (2) slots, one for saddle and other for the chest.
Like horses, players can't use the Nether portal, when riding on the donkey. They've to unmount first, before entering the Nether.
Although, donkeys are really good at traveling and carrying loads, they regenere health slowly than horses and other passive mobs.
How to tame a donkey?
In order to tame donkeys, players have to try riding it continuously, until hearts appear. The taming rate depends upon the temper of a donkey.
The temper of a donkey, ranges from 0-100. When a player tries to mount a donkey, 0-99 temper will be chosen randomly. The temper can be increased if fed.
Donkeys eat sugar, wheat, apple, golden carrot, golden apple, and hayblade; and their health can be increased when they are fed by players.
Their growth rate can be increased by 30, 20, 60, 240, and 180 seconds, when fed sugar, wheat, apple, golden carrot, golden apple, and hayble, respectively.
Donkey's health can be regeneratrd by 1, 2, 3, 4, 10,and 20 health bars, when fed sugar, wheat, apple, golden carrot, golden apple, and hayble, respectively.
How to breed donkeys?
To breed donkeys, players have to feed them golden apples or golden carrots to activate love mode. However, donkeys must be tamed, in order to work these methods.
Their newborn offspring remains untamed, until tamed by players. When two donkeys are fed, foals which are similar to parents, are born.
Additionally, if players breed a donkey with a horse, it will create a mule. In the game, a mule cannot be bred.
To sum it up, donkeys are tameable, passive mobs. They can be used for fast and efficient load travelling.
